The Best Fishing Marks Around Havnnes: Rotsundet, Vaggasnasen and the Outer Islands

One reason Havnnes ranks among the best bases for a sea fishing holiday in Norway is the variety of grounds within a short run of the harbour. Three distinct fishing zones lie within reach of the self-drive boats, each with its own species and conditions.

Rotsundet: the home grounds

The mouth of the Rotsundet sits in front of the houses. A wide sandy plateau around the 50-metre mark produces regular halibut, and the year-round herring stock keeps cod and saithe close by in every season. Sheltered from the worst of the weather, it is the natural choice for an early start or a short evening session.

The Lyngenfjord and Vaggasnasen

A crossing of around twenty minutes takes you to Vaggasnasen, one of the best-known marks in the region. Together with Rakkenesskallen, this stretch of deep fjord holds tusk, ling and redfish, often in numbers that surprise first-time visitors.

The outer waters: Arnøya and Vannøya

For a full day on the water, head out to the outer islands. The banks around Jewasgrunnen and the open coastal water produce the strongest cod fishing in the area, and the largest fish of a trip. This is weather-dependent water, so pick a settled day.

Reading the marks

Every Havnnes boat carries a Garmin GPS chartplotter and fishfinder, so finding the plateau edges and drop-offs and spotting fish beneath the boat is straightforward. Watch the depth, work the edges where the bottom changes, and let the drift carry you across the productive ground.

What you can catch where

Halibut and cod dominate the Rotsundet; tusk, ling and redfish come from the deeper fjord at Vaggasnasen; and the heaviest cod tend to come from the outer banks. For the full species list, see the sea fishing holiday overview, and for single-species detail, the halibut and cod guides.

Fish to the weather

The spread of grounds is what makes Havnnes reliable. When the outer coast is rough, the Rotsundet stays fishable, so there is almost always somewhere to drop a line. Always check the forecast before you head out. Book your accommodation or enquire about boat hire to plan your trip.
