Discover the history and charm of Havnnes Trading Post – a living heritage site in Northern Troms where the past is still present in every wall.

Welcome to Havnnes Museum & Photo Exhibition featuring Annie Giæver’s historic photographs

The Museum – Life at Havnnes Through the Ages

At the museum, you can explore historic photographs that capture everyday life at Havnnes. Among the exhibits you will discover:

  • Model boats

  • Antique cash registers and original shop fittings

  • Packaging of goods once sold at the trading post

Together, these artefacts offer a vivid insight into how trade and daily life were conducted along the Norwegian coast more than a century ago.

The Photo Exhibition – Annie Giæver’s Unique Perspective

On the second floor you will find the photo exhibition dedicated to Annie Giæver (1882–1956). Over the course of her life, she documented the people, landscapes and traditions of Northern Troms, creating an extraordinary visual archive of coastal life in the early 20th century.

A true highlight is the chance to see one of the very first colour photographs ever taken in Norway – a rare and remarkable piece of photographic history.

Most photographs are accompanied by QR codes with additional information that you can easily scan on your mobile phone.

The Bolinder Engine – Powering the Factory

A distinctive feature of Havnnes is the preserved Bolinder semi-diesel engine, a 90-horsepower crude-oil motor from 1928.

For more than two decades, from 1929 to 1952, the engine powered a generator that supplied electricity for both lighting and factory operations. Its huge 2.5-metre flywheel was so powerful that when the engine ran at full speed, coffee cups in nearby houses would shake on the tables.

Today, the Bolinder is on display in the old shrimp factory, located just across the harbour – only a 2–3 minute walk from the main museum building. Read more about the shrimp factory here.
